This position is in a civil service competitive class that is subject to examination. If you do not already have permanent NYC civil service status as Steam Fitter’s Helper, you will have to file to take the civil service exam for this title when offered by Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). Information regarding NYC civil service exams can be found on the DCAS website. This position is open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a program. Description:

Position Summary: The Steam Fitter’s Helper works within the Division of School Facilities (DSF) of the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) to ensure a safe and clean environment for all students of NYCPS system.

 

This position performs work relating to installing, maintaining, and repairing piping, controls, and equipment for heating systems, compressed air systems, refrigerating systems, air conditioning systems, steam and hot water systems, fire suppression systems, cooling systems, and sprinkler systems. Performs related work.

 

Reports to: Steamfitter

 

Direct Reports: N/A

 

Key Relationships: Relationships will be fostered with other DSF management and skilled trade staff.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of piping, controls and equipment for heating systems, compressed air systems, refrigerating systems, air conditioning systems, steam and hot water systems, fire suppression systems, cooling systems, and sprinkler systems.
  • Assists in the installation of boilers, feedwater, vacuum and condensate equipment, fuel oil piping, and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Assists in the layout of work from plans, specifications, and sketches.
  • Assists with welding and brazing equipment when needed. 

 

Qualification Requirements:

 

Minimum

 

1.   Three years of full-time satisfactory mechanical experience as a Steam Fitter's Helper acquired within the last ten years; or

2.   At least one and one-half years of experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, vocational or technical high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade, vocational or technical high school.

 

License Requirement

 

A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York may be required for appointment to positions in certain agencies. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

 

Salary: $373.17 per day

 

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
