This position is in a civil service competitive class that is subject to examination. Position is only open to current City employees with permanent NYC civil service status as Accountant or permanent in an equivalent title that is eligible for transfer under 6.1.9 to Accountant. This position is open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a program. Description:

Position Summary: Under supervision, performs various phases of work involving accounting in Fiscal Operations. Performs related work.

 

Reports to:  Director of Fiscal Operations

 

Direct Reports: N/A

 

Key Relationships: BERS Section/Unit Managers and Supervisors. Interacts with retirees and members of BERS. 

 

Responsibilities 

 

  • Within the Fiscal Operations Department of BERS, performs professional accounting work of moderate difficulty.
  • Examines accounting records for data accuracy, completeness, and compliance with BERS Rules and Regulations, IRS rules, GASB pronouncements and Comptroller’s directives, prepare work papers and reports.
  • Reconciles accounting records with BERS bank statements and data from Enterprise resource planning

System.

  • Responds both orally and in writing to inquiries from BERS personnel and external entities.
  • Prepares accounting reports and schedules
  • Assists in the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial report, State of New York Insurance report, and other reports requested by management.
  • Participates in and reviews the analysis and interpretation of accounting data.
  • Performs appropriate data entry functions based on related research within the department.
  • Performs other accounting activities as directed by the Director of Fiscal Operations.

 

Qualification Requirements:

 

Minimum:

 

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in accounting, including one course each in advanced accounting and auditing; or
  2. A valid New York State Certified Public Accountant license.

 

Plus 

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of the experience described in "1" above

 

Special Note

 

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of experience as an AccountantAssignment I or at least two years of satisfactory fulltime professional accounting or auditing experience.

 

Preferred:

  • Previous accounting experience.
  • Available for appointment.

 

Salary: $64,998 - $70,000 

 

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
