Position Summary: The Office of Legal Services (OLS) promotes and monitors compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including managing compliance with Commissioner’s Regulation Part 130 relating to Substantial Equivalency of Instruction in Nonpublic Schools. The Risk Management and Litigation Attorney will be responsible for providing legal advice and interpretation on high-profile legal, legislative, and regulatory issues of major importance that have the potential for broad impact on the educational policies and goals of public and nonpublic schools.
The Risk Management and Litigation Attorney will report to the Executive Deputy Counsel for Budget, Compliance and Operations, and will assist with conducting investigations, including gathering information at site visits, and will interpret legislation and regulations, perform legal research and analysis, draft legal memoranda, and support and advise program offices in implementing key initiatives and complying with legal mandates. Performs related work.
Reports to: Executive Deputy Counsel for Budget, Compliance, and Operations
Direct Reports: N/A
Key Relationships: General Counsel, Executive Deputy Counsel, NYCPS Counsel, Assistant Corporation Counsel, and NYCPS program office staff in the Office of Nonpublic and Charter Schools and in the Finance Office. Acts as a liaison to the New York City Law Department on related litigation.

In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements: To be assigned to AL II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
NOTE: Selected candidates must remain members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of their employment.
Preferred
Salary: $95,222 - $99,722
(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
