This position is in a civil service competitive class that is subject to examination. Position is only open to current NYC employees with permanent NYC civil service status as Electrician or current NYC employees who are permanent in an equivalent title that is eligible for transfer under 6.1.9 to Electrician or candidates who have taken the most recent Electrician civil service examination. This position is open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a program. Description:

Position Summary: The Electrician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing electrical and data infrastructure components in all field locations, data centers, and network locations. In addition, the Electrician is responsible for supporting the electrical and data initiatives in over 1800+ schools as well as performing all related break-fix work. Performs related work.

 

Reports to:  Supervisor Electrician

 

Direct Reports:  N/A

 

Key Relationships: Works with DOE technical teams to provide technical solutions to all field locations, data centers, and networks.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Ensures that standards for cabling and electrical infrastructure are adhered to and in compliance with the division’s policies and procedures.
  • Supports current and future needs for over 1800+ schools as they relate to electrical and data initiatives.
  • Ensures that site surveys are performed at all network and administrative locations throughout the five boroughs.
  • Maintains and updates break/fix ticket queues for electrical installations and repairs in order to prioritize incidents and escalate issues to DIIT management in a timely manner.
  • Works with various school personnel and other DOE offices to troubleshoot and resolve problems related to electrical installations, maintenance, and repair.
  • Coordinates the purchase of supplies and materials required for electrical projects.
  • Works with the Supervisor of Network Facilities to coordinate the resources and requirements needed in support of new schools, wireless integrations, and carrier circuit installations as well as data center initiatives.
  • Coordinates the installation, repair, and maintenance of data, telephone and camera work with vendors, mechanics and technicians

 

Qualification Requirements:

 

Minimum

 

    1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician acquired within the last fifteen years; or
    2. At least three years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician acquired within the last fifteen years and sufficient satisfactory experience as an electrician's helper or apprentice electrician or training in the electrical field acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of such helper experience, apprentice training or training in the electrical field.

 

License Requirements

 

A Motor Vehicle Driver license valid in the State of New York.  

 

For certain positions, a Special Electrician license issued by the New York City Department of Buildings is required.

 

All licenses must be maintained for the duration of employment.

 

Preferred

 

  • Ten years of experience as an electrician, preferably with a strong knowledge in the installation, maintenance, and repair of wiring for phones, data, and cameras.  
  • Knowledge of Passport, Magic and other DOE systems is a plus.
  • Ability to oversee multiple complicated IT and electrical projects at the same time.
  • Good communication skills.

 

Salary: $440.16 DAY RATE

 

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
