This position is in a civil service competitive class that is subject to examination. If you do not already have permanent NYC civil service status as Exterminator, you will have to file to take the civil service exam for this title when offered by Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). Information regarding NYC civil service exams can be found on the DCAS website. This position is open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a program. Description:

Position Summary:  SchoolFood is committed to the highest standards of nutrition while offering fresh, appetizing, and delicious food to all New York City students.  Part of this process is ensuring that food service staff have the most support and training regarding cleaning and preparation of food within the kitchen and surrounding areas.

 

As part of this effort, the Senior Exterminator will work closely with staff and management in the rollout of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and procedures. The Senior Exterminator will be engaged in the prevention, control, and elimination of insects, vermin, and other pests in all areas of school buildings. Performs related work.

 

Reports to: Supervisor, Exterminators   

 

Direct Reports: Exterminators

 

Key Relationships:  Relationships will be fostered with Office of School Support Services staff as well as with the greater DOE community. 

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Inspects premises and investigates complaints of infestation. Determines and performs the appropriate method of extermination to be used. 
  • Makes assignments to Exterminators engaged in preparing and using insecticides.
  • Manages difficult and problematic areas of concern related to IPM. Supervises the preparation of various substances used in exterminating.
  • Supervises the cleaning and repair of equipment related to exterminating services. Ensures the safe storage and cautious use of the various substances employed in exterminating operations.
  • Acts as liaison between administration and the SchoolFood management team to resolve issues of concern.
  • Keeps records and makes reports on exterminating operations. 

 

Qualification Requirements:

 

Minimum

 

A valid certificate as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator for Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Rodent Control (7A) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This certificate must be maintained for the duration of employment.

 

License Requirement

For appointment to certain positions, at the time of appointment candidates must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

 

SPECIAL NOTE

 

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, two years of full-time satisfactory practical experience in the preparation and use of insecticides, rodenticides, baits, traps, and related chemicals/equipment for the extermination of insects, vermin and other pests.

 

Preferred

 

  • Experience with IPM services in a school setting.
  • Familiarity with New York State Education pesticide law and NYC Local Law 37.

 

Salary: $37,504 - $42,134  

 

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
