This position is in a civil service competitive class that is subject to examination. Position is only open to current NYC employees with permanent NYC civil service status as Steam Fitter or current NYC employees who are permanent in an equivalent title that is eligible for transfer under 6.1.9 to Steam Fitter or candidates who have taken the most recent Steam Fitter civil service examination. This position is open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a program. Description:

 Position Summary: The Steamfitter works within the Division of School Facilities (DSF) of the Department of Education (DOE) to ensure a safe and clean environment for all students of the New York City public school system. Incumbent provides proper placement and alignment or pipe systems according to blueprints and instructions; assembles and repairs pipe systems of various shapes, sizes and pressures; performs work relating to installing, maintaining and repairing piping, controls and equipment for heating systems, compressed air systems, refrigerating systems, air conditioning systems, steam, and hot water systems, fire suppression systems, cooling systems and, sprinkler systems. Incumbent is instrumental in standard and escalated emergency response as it relates to their scope of responsibility—ensuring the safety of students, faculty, and administration within NYC Schools. Performs related work.

 

Reports to:  Supervisor of Mechanic

 

Direct Reports:  N/A

 

Key Relationships:  Relationships will be fostered with other DSF management and skilled trade staff.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Responds to emergencies as assigned; installs, maintains, and repairs piping, controls, and equipment for heating systems, compressed air systems, refrigerating systems, air conditioning systems, steam, and hot water systems, fire suppression systems, cooling systems, and sprinkler systems.
  • Installs boilers, feedwater, vacuum, and condensate equipment, fuel oil piping, and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Lays out work from plans, specifications, and sketches.
  • May work with welding and brazing equipment.
  • Supervises the work of Steam Fitter's Helpers.

 

Qualification Requirements:

 

Minimum

 

  1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience acquired within the last 15 years as a Steam Fitter; or
  2. Not less than two and one-half years of such experience acquired within the last 10 years plus sufficient full-time experience as a helper or apprentice to make up a total of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of experience will be credited for each year of apprenticeship or helper experience or for each year of completed approved trade or vocational school training in the steam fitting field.

 

License Requirement

 

For appointment to certain agencies, candidates must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. The license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

 

 

Salary: $385.00 Day Rate

 

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
