This position is in a civil service competitive class that is subject to examination. Position is only open to current NYC employees with permanent NYC civil service status as Machinist  or current NYC employees who are permanent in an equivalent title that is eligible for transfer under 6.1.9 to Machinist  or candidates who have taken the most recent Machinist civil service examination. This position is open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a program. Description:

Position Summary: The Machinist works within the Division of School Facilities (DSF) of the Department of Education (DOE) to ensure a safe and clean environment for all students of the New York City public school system. Incumbent performs a range of activities related to the maintenance, repair, care and upkeep of building property, machinery and systems. The Machinist assembles, repairs, and fabricates metal parts by operating mechanical equipment; assembles parts into sub-units or complete units; uses blueprints and design sketches to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product; takes measurements of material and selects appropriate machine for the process. The incumbent will be instrumental in emergency response as needed and assigned, ensuring the safety of students and personnel. Performs related work.

Key Relationships:  Relationships will be fostered with other skilled trade staff.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Sets up and operates machine shop equipment and tools, such as engine lathes, shapers, milling machines, drill presses, planers and grinders.
  • Uses machinist tools and instruments.
  • Maintains, repairs, tests, overhauls, and replaces all types of building systems equipment, such as fans, blowers, exhausters, pumps and compressors. Fabricates obsolete parts from existing parts or sketches.
  • Prepares reports and requisitions; maintains records and inventories of supplies and materials.
  • May operate a motor vehicle or other motorized equipment in the performance of assigned duties.

 

Qualification Requirements:

 

Minimum

 

  1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience acquired within the last 15 years as a machinist; or

 

  1. At least two and one-half years of full-time satisfactory experience acquired within the last ten years as a machinist plus sufficient full-time experience as a machinist helper or an apprentice machinist, or training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school, to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of helper or apprentice experience or approved trade or vocational high school, up to a maximum of two and one-half years.

 

License Requirement

 

A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York is required. This license must be maintained in good standing for the duration of employment.

 

Salary: $298.24 Daily Rate

 

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
